It wasn't until 1859 until Thomas's widow Abbie Clark constructed a dam on Tout's Brook to create an ice house and skating pond. The pond became known to everyone as Clark's Pond. In 1907, William Edgar Reeve treasured a commission to acquire Clark's Pond and swampy lowlands for the town of Westfield. A deal was struck with Patrick Traynor for $2,017.30 and approved on November 4, 1907. The park grew in size when Peckham's Dump on the northern portion was purchased from William Peckham.

With a mishmash of properties, in 1915 Landscape Architect and engineer J. Wallace Higgins was hired and given $30,000 to design the parklands. Three years later on June 1, 1918 Mindowaskin Park was officially opened and dedicated as a public park. The ceremony was attended by New Jersey Governor Walter Edge. In 1922 the original bandstand was constructed and is still used today.
