This is a one of a kind hand turned item requiring at least eight hours to complete.

The main barrel is constructed from three pieces of Ambrosia Maple glued together and then hand turned on the lathe. The eyepiece and independant rotating cylinder are turned from contrasting Padauk. I then hand sand each kaleidoscope up to 1200 grit, and then finish with Mylands friction polish on the lathe. The object box is is filled with blue, black, and clear jewels, and then filled with glycerin oil. This gives a fluid motion to the jewels as the cylinder is rotated.

The kaliedoscope measures 13" long and 2 3/4" high. Resting in the matching cradle the kaleidoscope measures 5" high.

I use three front surface mirrors in my kaleidoscopes. Front surface mirrors have the reflective coating on the front surface of the mirror. This gives a much clearer and crisper image. On regular mirrors the image must travel through the glass to the reflective coating on the back, and then travel back through the glass. This creates distortion to the image.

A great conversation piece, and a great addition to any room.
