SUBJECT: A really sensational and charming 1900s print of a young woman with her blue-ribbon horses, set under hand-cut glass in an ornate Victorian-era oval wood frame finished with gilding and gesso molding. This wonderful gem of equine history is large, heavy, and rich with craftsmanship, from the hand-built frame through to the molding and gilding work. Original hooks and braided twine are intact on the back. The portrait itself is by R. Atkinson Fox (1860-1935), who captured well what was by then long a classic truth: the bond between women and horses is eternal.

HORSE NOTES: Both the bay and grey are wearing simple linen bridles, but the rest is a complex jumble. When we follow the reins one by one, all four of them cross the young woman's hand, but they don't all exit. And look at the zooms to see Atkinson's error at the mouth of the grey horse - he started the left rein in the wrong place, inadvertently making it look as though it were passing through the horse's mouth. The small ring above the snaffle bit belongs to... what? A wide strap that loops under the girl's elbow and then reappears in her palm. Perhaps it's meant to be a lead rope. Oh well, picky me. The whole thing is just wonderful.

ITEM DETAILS: This ornately framed antique print measures 21.5 x 25.5 inches from edge to edge of the frame and is in very good condition. The frame's backer board is aged and wavy under its original brads. There is a very small spill of the gilding at the left edge of the glass and a one half-inch crease or tear along the left edge of the print itself, just near the horses' stall door. Minor hairline cracks appear in some of the gesso molding, but all of these flaws are inconsequential and speak only to the age of this treasure.

SHIPPING & HANDLING: Framed artworks are padded with care in bubble wrap and shipped in rigid secure packaging within two business days of purchase.

VINTAGE: All vintage and antique items have unique histories and are offered for sale in exactly the condition they were found. They are sold “AS IS.”
