This is a wooden mink stretcher. I was first introduced to mink stretchers at my in-laws home, where they had a painted one hanging on the wall. I’d never seen one before. My husband trapped all through high school to earn extra money so he filled me in on their purpose. They were used to stretch the hide of a mink in preparation for sale. A little gross – but still interesting. I always found their shape appealing so when we found some at an antique store I bought them thinking I would like to paint something too. I think they are especially interesting because there was a large mink farm near where I grew up.

I have painted a couple, but really wanted to experiment with staining. So I played around a bit and came up with a method to make pictures on the wood using just stain and polyurethane. I was pleasantly pleased and found the smells of woodworking reminded me of my childhood when I would visit my father’s woodworking shop. I hope you find these as lovely as I do.

This piece of art can be mounted on the wall. The stretcher is very light and you could use a photo hanging bracket that has spikes on it – they would stick right in and support it. These can also look lovely leaning – against a wall, on a table, on a mantle…

Any discolorations, scratches, pit marks, etc in the wood itself are a result of the antique nature of these boards. They were used on a working mink farm (now defunct) and were stored for several years. These marks, instead of taking away from the piece of art, give it an even more unique look. I hope you will agree! Thanks for looking.
