Cini Sterling Moonstone Pin Black Starr & Gorham Swirled Leaves Very Early Mark Vintage 1920s, offered by bohemiantrading.

Guglielmo Cini’s sterling silver jewelry is much admired for its craftsmanship and design integrity. This exceptional early brooch is a fine example of his classical ornate style, and employs a swirled tropical leaf pattern that surrounds a captivating genuine moonstone. The design is also known as "tourbillion," and refers to a spiral effect.

The brooch is layered with flower stems peeking out from between (and below) the leaves, and terminating around the edge with five small flowers. The arrangement moves to the center with five silver balls placed opposite the outer flowers. The design is dynamic and symmetrical. The moonstone is held in a finely engraved bezel, and the band surrounding the moonstone is chased and elevated showing the moonstone to its best advantage (trademarks of his style). A word on moonstones: they are described as having “adularescence,” which is a light changing quality, and refers to a milky, bluish luster that emanates from within the stone. This moonstone exhibits this pleasing quality.

This beautiful small brooch is marked “Black,Starr & Gorham Sterling by Cini” on a cartouche on the back. This is a very early mark for Cini and dates between 1922 and 1929 (see below for more Cini history). It is in excellent condition with a soft patina accentuating the details. The moonstone has a few light scratches, but nothing that compromises its impeccable beauty.

ABOUT CINI: Guglielmo Cini was trained as a silversmith in Florence, Italy. He immigrated to the US in 1922, and, at the young age of 17, started his company in Boston, MA. For a very brief time, Cini’s jewelry was marketed under the name of Black, Starr, and Gorham, one of the oldest and most prestigious jewelry concerns in the US. Black, Starr, and Gorham went through several partnership changes, and the mark used on this piece was used between 1922 and 1929. They were among a handful of jewelry firms asked to exhibit at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, in 1876, along with Tiffany and Co. Several European royal families were among their clientele. In the late 1950’s, Mr. Cini moved his business to Laguna Beach, CA, where his work was embraced by the Hollywood film industry. His style uses classical as well as Renaissance and Baroque motifs, and his work is considered among the finest American made sterling silver and sterling vermeil jewelry.
