The first pillar candle holder in this photo is the 12 in. tall item in this listing.
(also in this group is my 9.5 in. and 7 in. pillar, both available in my shop in the raku pottery section)
This pillar candle holder is 12 in. tall, and 5 5/8 in. across the top. I wanted a form that would allow me to focus on a painterly autumn woodland motif that would show off the birch trees so prolific in the quiet forests near my studio. It was fired with the raku process. As with all raku fired ceramic ware, this piece is not water safe, and not food safe. It is intended for visual appreciation and specifically designed to hold a 4in. to 5in. candle. The shape is sturdy, and
I paid attention to having a significant stability to the piece.

The photo with the 3 pillar grouping shows this 12 in. pillar first, the 9.5 in pillar second, and the 7 in. pillar third

The shapes were made on my potters wheel and joined together when the clay was leather hard.
After completely drying (slowly) slip was applied and burnished before the first firing. They are completely hollow and very sturdy.

When designing these pillar candle holders, I envisioned them being used in groups of 2 or three, and you should be able to pick sizes large, med, and small that will go well together proportionally. Pay close attention to the hight measurement when choosing your pillars.

I could not resist the temptation to paint a simple landscape on the top of each one, even though it will probably end up covered with a candle.

The over all color pf this pillar is a strong to subtle copper intermingled with areas of white birch trees and atmospheric changes in color that show a turqoise tendency. A good strong black common to the raku resist glazing technique is very evident in the trees, that change to white in many areas with black birch tree marking details. When catching the natural light from a window, the copper is more prominent..

My materials are purchased in Sheffield, Mass. where my clay is mined and processed just an hour from my studio in the Berkshire mountains of Northwest Conn. I have been making raku pottery for 30 years and continue to be inspired by that process. My pieces require multiple firings to achieve the depth of glaze and design that inspires me.
