The "Dervish" - a supported spindle in Mulga and Curly Wandoo - mid weight, longer style

This spindle is a stock item and you will receive the item in these photos. This example has a longer shaft and heavier whorl than my standard Dervish models making its spin style intermediate between a Russian and Tibetan spindle.

This new style of support spindle has a thin straight shaft and a small diameter whorl at the base. The spindle shaft is made from the beautiful Australian timber Mulga, hard wearing, smooth to the touch and easy on the eye with its deep lustrous brown colour. The support tip has a fine point for long spins.

The hollowed whorl is made from Curly Wandoo (Eucalyptus wandoo). It is a hard and very dense wood making it ideal for this purpose. It is a light brown and takes a good smooth finish. This particular piece has beautiful ripple figuring and is from Western Australia. The shape of the whorl resembles the spinning skirt of a Sufi dervish. The whorl incorporates a brass balance pin to fine tune the spin. The shape of the whorl resembles the spinning skirt of a Sufi dervish.

The spindle is finished to a very smooth surface, polished with a french polish and then a final gloss of carnauba wax for a long lasting shine and protection.

Your spindle is checked for quality and spin before despatch and comes with a tip protector and is packed with some Tasmanian Corriedale roving and a signed tag with the woods used listed and date of making.

This spindle style has a remarkably fast spin, huge duration and excellent balance due to the low centre of gravity and the placing of the largest whorl diameter as near to the base as is practical. This accentuates the gyroscopic stability making it highly suited to park and draft style spinning.

Dimensions - spindle length overall 280 mm, (11 in), weight 50 grams (1.78 oz approx). All my spindles are tested before despatch.
