Here is a great sterling silver ring set with a natural Cerrillos turquoise stone from the "Verde" Turquoise Mine located just south of Santa Fe, New Mexico. The cabochon was cut by me, Philip Chambless, in my Zuni Mountain Studio close to El Morro, New Mexico. This cabochon sits on a wide sterling silver ring shank that was cast in a carved tuffa stone mold in the old way. I have always loved taking my left over silver scraps and converting them into these unique old style ring shanks.
I personally mined the rough material from a turquoise claim that I operate near Mount Chalchihuitl, the famous Pre-Columbian turquoise mine which supplied gemstones for the Aztecs and Chaco Canyon among others. This mine has been operated under many names and owners over the years. First operated in pre-Columbian times, then In the 1890's it was known as the Montezuma, and in the early 1900's it was called the Rough Rider by then owner A B Renehan. In the 1970's the names used were the Turk #1, Old Cerrillos and Verde. The last photo is of the workings in the main Verde pit which has seen mining activity for almost a thousand years.
It is marked with both ".925" and my "CHAMBLESS" hallmark on the inside of the shank and is a size 6 3/8. I do not resize rings myself as that is a skill best left to jewelry repair professionals, but this ring could be slightly enlarged... If all else fails, there is the option of making a special order but the stones are all very much one of a kind so there would definitely be differences. BUT that's what makes them so special!!!!
