This is a set of 3 matched fancy cut, faceted Amethysts from Africa, with a total carat weight of 17 carats; the largest stone measures 12 x 10 x 8 mm and the smaller stones are around 11 x 9 x 7 mm. This type of fancy cut is sometimes referred to as a 'mango cut', presumably referring to the shape of the fruit.

These Amethysts have excellent color saturation, being neither too dark nor too pale. The clarity of the gems is enhanced by the intriguing texture from the combination of faceting and the carving on the back of the stones, which also give added sparkle. These gems offer a wide variety of design alternatives; they would work as a cuff link and tie pin or ring set, or as an earring and ring set; they could also be set together in a bracelet or necklace. Their clarity and color would go well with a setting of either bright metals like silver and gold, or the darker metals like titanium or oxidized copper.

The pictures give an idea of how the gemstones look against a variety of backgrounds. The last picture shows the detail of the gems in profile.

Amethyst, being a type of quartz, measures 7 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness and is regarded as being suitable for everyday wear in jewelry. Amethyst is the wedding anniversary gemstone for the 6th year of marriage and is the birthstone for February.
