Bowls can be turned on the lathe from wood that is either dried, or still "green" (wet). This lightweight bowl of New England Sugar Maple Burl was turned while green, then allowed to dry. As a green bowl dries, the wood naturally distorts due to shrinkage, often producing a wavy rim, as in this piece. There are a couple natural voids along the edge of the rim.

And the bowl has a subtle, random texture, due to the different rates of shrinkage between areas of dense and less dense wood; it's a pleasing effect that would be impossible to produce artificially. It gives the bowl "chatoyance", the appearance of 3-d grain as the angle of light changes.

Diameter is 11 inches, height is 3-1/2 inches. Minimally finished in a satin varnish, polished with finishing waxes.

Item # BW74.
