I'm calling this Mary's Contrary Garden. Oh, sorry about the pictures being sideways. I keep turning them, but the still load this way. Please turn your monitor to view correctly, lol
When I was little, even though my name was Maryellen, everyone called me Mary. Of course, that also meant people quoted the nursery rhyme, Mary Mary, Quite Contrary, how does your garden grow? With silver bells and... You know.
Why is this quilt named for that? First, This garden is made from a variety of about 14 different floral fabrics, all from my "stash". I cut the strips using an Accuquilt GO! die cutting machine, and then didn't get to make the top for a while. I finally had some time in February. It's created using a design called the Jelly Roll Race 1600 quilt. You start by sewing all the strips end to end, creating about 1600 inches in one long strip. Then you fold it in half, and sew the side. Do that 5 or 6 more times until you have a top.
I was playing with options for the border, and knew it needed something pretty. I looked for 3 days for the fabric I knew I had on the shelf. I pulled others, but didn't like the way they looked. I picked the rose print as the best choice. Finally found it, and got the borders on. Then I layered it with a tone on tone white wide backing and Warm & Natural cotton batting, and pinned the layers together.
Then I started quilting a loopy meander using nylon quilting thread and my machine broke. The belt snapped, so I had to set this quilt aside while I got my machine repaired. The case of the machine needed to be removed so the belt could be replaced. It's not like the vintage machines where the belt is exposed.
Finally got the machine back, and had more issues trying to quilt it. Those were operator errors, though, lol. All this time, I think the quilt was a little contrary, but ohhh what a garden!
Carnations, roses, rose petals, assorted other flowers, and even some fruit blossoms!. Reds, deep wine colors, blues, greens, warm creams, and more.
It's done, and I love it. I'm offering it to you so you can enjoy a garden all the time. Machine wash cold, tumble dry low, and snuggle on your favorite chair or porch swing. Perfect for a picnic, or even a small quilt atop a twin bed.
