Josef Albers was an original renaissance man of art and design. He was a key figure of Bauhaus and Black Forest College and worked in glass, furniture, type, lino-cuts, words, paint, silk screens, lithographs, and serigraphs. He was a teacher, a poet, and philosopher who investigated the use and perception of colors in art and design, and questioned the role of art and design in society. He was amazingly observant, inquisitive, and eloquent -- as well as bold and opinionated, and I have always appreciated his methodology of inquiry and the pedagogy he used to explain his thoughts; even though I don’t personally gravitate towards his type of formalism.

This Sidney Janis Gallery catalogue, is titled “New Paintings by Josef Albers” and is, by outward appearance, a modest looking little perfect bound catalogue, but it's contents of 4 serigraph prints from Alber's Homage to the Square series is anything but modest. The catalogue contains 5 double fold pages that hold a poem and 4 Homage to the Square serigraphs designed by, and reportedly print-supervised by, none other than Mr. Albers himself. In real life, the colors of these serigraphs are amazingly saturated, bright and intense, and after many-many photo’s I have given up trying to get an accurate representation of how vivid and the alive the colors are. They would indeed be wonderful for framing, and indeed I think that’s what likely happened to the vast majority of these catalogues; as portions of the catalogue can be found here and there on the interweb for up to $175 a page.

Condition wise, the part that matters the most, the inside, is in amazing condition with no tears, folded corners, scratches, creases, yellowing, foxing to be found anywhere. There is a perceptible slight bend to the entire catalogue about a ½” in from the right hand side to all pages, as if someone once was a bit too forceful with their page flipping…but it is hard to discern and would not affect framing at all. Besides the bend (which does not encroach on the prints), all internal pages with poem and serigraphs are in amazing shape.

The front cover shows some surface wear and scuffing and also has what seems to be a couple light pencil marks on it. There is also some yellowing to the right and bottom sides as if a small book sat atop it in a sunny location for some time. All corners are in very-fine shape, and there are no rips anywhere. The back cover also shows some scuffing and surface wear, shows some slight yellowing to the left edge, and also has an extremely slight ‘n’ light liquid stain that does come anywhere close to bleeding through to the inside. Again there are no tears, bent corners, creases, etc…

Catalogue is 8.5” x 11”
Images are all 7.5” sq and include (in order):
Homage to the Square: Between the Lines 1968
Homage to the Square: Saturated 1968
Homage to the Square: Sentinel 1967
Homage to the Square: Park 1967
(shown above in reverse order of appearance)

The poem is awesome, and is about color, but I will refrain from printing it here.
