Since 1888 the National Geographic Society’s mission has been to increase and diffuse geographic knowledge notably through the publication of their well known magazine and books. This wonderful print of a “Dalmatian” dog is from “The Book of Dogs – An Intimate Study of Mankind’s Best Friend” (copyright 1919) by the National Geographic Society. This natural color portrait is from the original done by artist Louis Agassiz Fuertes (1874 – 1927). Fuertes graduated from Cornell University in 1897 with an architecture degree. While he is widely remembered today as one of the leading ornithologist painters and illustrators of the early 20th century, you can see from this print that birds were not his only area of expertise – any dog lover can appreciate the accuracy and attention to detail in this print. Fuertes died tragically in 1927 when the car he was driving was struck by a moving train. Today his artwork is as enduring and wonderful as when it was first published in 1919.

The soft muted colors and pastel tones offer a glimpse into turn of the century publishing. The print definition and quality are typical of that time period as well, lacking much of the sharp clarity that is available today with offset printing but adds timeless charm to this beautiful and unique image.

There is slight uniform yellowing on the back of the print but the look/quality of paper around the actual image is perfect. There is slight wear and darkening at the page edges in line with what you would expect of a print that is over 90 years old. This print was originally on a full sheet with another dog picture but was cut in half to create a nicer display of the image. The rough edge from the binding has also been removed (the interior edge is trimmed). Prints are carefully mounted on mats to simplify framing after purchase and to protect the print during shipment. All mat materials are acid and lignin free, the actual print is not archival safe. The original book measured approximately 7 x 9-1/2” but the book plate is being sold custom matted to fit in an standard 8x10 frame.

Vintage book prints are always the perfect decorating choice for any room in your home or office. They also make great gifts for the animal enthusiast or dog lover as they are always beautiful, unique and unusual.
