This piece “War Horse”, is the counterpart to my earlier piece, “Buffalo Pony”.

The Native American possessed two distinct ponies, his buffalo pony and his war pony. His Buffalo Pony had to have speed, stamina and the courage to ride into the thundering herd. While his war pony also had to have speed and courage, it had to be possessed of incredible endurance as well. Speed and the ability to travel endlessly saved many a Brave from his enemies be they white or red. The U.S. counterpart to the Indian Ponies was called the “American Horse”. It ate grain, and was therefore tied to the cumbersome army supply trains. The scruffy Indian ponies ate the prairie grass over which they flew and could carry their warrior riders anywhere.

My pony is an Appaloosa. This colorful horse was bred by a Northern Plains tribe called the Nez Perce. They were highly prized animals. His rider sits on a Sioux style padded saddle made of leather and adorned with red wool, beads and brass bells. The saddle sits atop a buffalo blanket. My pony is further adorned with eagle feathers and ribbons in flying mane and tied tail. He rocks above a base wrapped in leather, adorned with Native American portraits and beaded strips of Sioux motif. The grass atop the base represents the prairie over which he roamed or thundered.

My pony is 35” from front to back hooves and stands 31” from base to mane tip. As always, he smoothly rocks on a ball bearing mechanism and the under base is branded with my “Rocking R” logo.
