pdf copy of the pattern of the Shawl and Throw from Variations on a Theme of Orkney Lace by Elizabeth Lovick

This variation can be made using almost any yarn. In a 4 ply/fingering or below it makes a lovely shawl; in thicker yarns it makes a cosy throw. The finished size will depend on the thickness of the yarn and the size of the needles.

Materials for a Shawl - All weights are approximate

'cobweb' weight
(eg a ColourMart 2/28, J&S 1 ply Supreme or Cobweb)
about 150 g with border and lace, 90 g without
pair 3 mm needles
3mm circular needle

'lace weight'
(eg a ColourMart 2/14, J&S 2 ply Supreme or 2 ply lace weight)
about 300 g with border and lace, 175 g without
pair 4 mm needles
4 mm circular needle

4 ply/fingering
(eg a ColourMart 3/14, J&S 2 ply jumper weight)
about 500 g with border and lace, 350 g without
pair 5 mm needles
5 mm circular needle

DK weight
1000 g DK weight yarn with border and lace, 800 g without
pair 6 mm needles

Materials for a Throw

DK weight
800g DK weight yarn
pair 5 mm needles
5 mm circular needle

Aran weight
1700 g (2340 yards) aran weight yarn. Mine uses 900 g Colinette Giotto and 800 g Colinette Skye
pair 6 mm needles
6 mm circular needle

Size - All figures are approximate

Shawls: 'cobweb' weight - 48" square; 'lace weight' - 54" square; 4 ply/fingering - 60" square; DK shawl - 66" square
