Scottish Arran knitting is a design classic, coming in and out of favor through the years. The traditional stitches of cable and interwoven knotting are deeply satisfying to knit, to trace your fingers over, and to wear.

They humbly reflect the beautiful shapes found in nature: gnarly branches, fine twigs, twining honeysuckle tendrils, seashells.....

I am loving the Wilderness Apron. It feels so right to make a panel of Scottish Arran knitting, adorn it with utilitarian straps and create a piece that is edgy and modern and yet entirely traditional - an apron! In Arran!

I've knitted it using a lovely pale blue mohair-mix chunky yarn that has tiny threads and fibres in pretty hues like pale lemon.

A wonderful layering piece to wear over dresses or skirts, tunics or ... whatever you fancy.

The Wilderness Apron measures about 14" long and about 13" wide plus stretchy apron strings cord so will fit all sizes and be a different look - small maid's apron style on some, large swathe of knitted loveliness on others such as children.

{ my love of the apron}

I love aprons. I love all kinds of aprons, especially the half apron in all its glorious forms.

Aprons are loaded with meaning - from motherhood to kitchen slave, fisherwoman to district nurse, domestic goddess to bondage queen ... aprons are worn by women in all cultures; from a piece of silk worn by a Geisha to a hard-wearing long linen rectangle, just another layer of warmth, in Peru ...

.... aprons can all things to all people and yet they are a simple piece of fabric or fibre across our laps, tied at the back or doubled around to the front if you really mean business .....

Here I proudly present an Inner Wild homage to an archetypal garment - the apron.
