Three beautiful soup plates, made by Ashworth Bros in Hanley, England, which is in Staffordshire. They feature a stunning black and white floral design. This design is simple, classic and elegant...to me it is very French in style.

They are rather heavy, as expected with ironstone. The backs have the Ashworth Bros. mark indicating the Mayfield pattern, as well as the crown imprint, and a number imprint (8/90?); one is stamped with the number 17, and another with the number 8. The Ashworth Bros. mark is the one used between 1862 and 1890, placing the age of the platter somewhere between 122 and 150 years old.

They are 8 3/4" in diameter. As expected with its age, there is small, fine crazing throughout. One of the plates is slightly darker in shade than the others. One plate has 2 tiny cracks about 3/8" apart on the rim; they appear to me to be a manufacturer's flaw. There are a few little bumps and bubbles, and some paint gone astray, under the glaze, that are manufacturer's flaws. One plate has a small chip on the side of the rim; it is not very visible from the top. There are also a number of small rough spots on the rims. Overall these are in lovely vintage condition, and are actually much better than I would expect of tableware that is well over 100 years old.

Because these are ironstone, they are quite durable, and could still be used on your table. Please note that if you do use them, I recommend that you wash them by hand, not in the dishwasher.

So pretty, these would make a wonderful addition to your transferware collection. Because they are in classic black & white, they will also mix in well with your more contemporary pieces.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or would like additional photographs.
