Original Steel Plate Engraving - Scenes, famous places.
Engraved by Joseph Swan after a picture by John Fleming
Series: History Of The Highlands (1849)

Printed in Great Britain during the mid-19th century by A. Fullerton and Co. (London, Edinburgh and Dublin), this genuine antique print is over 160 years old. It is not a modern reproduction.

This is a steel plate engraving, impressed on medium weight wove paper. The plate marks are visible on the full page scan.

The subject is Loch Lochy (Invernesshire), from Tor-a-cromerh, looking north east from Clunes. A group of sheep is in the foreground, watched by two figures (children?) and a dog. More sheep can be seen in the valley below. There are boats and two sailing ships on the lake.

This work is finely detailed, as is common with the steel plate engraving, with multiple shades of contrast due to the exceptional technique of the engraver. I have enhanced the contrast a bit in the first image to bring out the detail. The paper is actually the warm cream color common to antique prints.

Condition notes:
The image area is flat and smooth. Light browning can be seen on close inspection, and scattered spotting is visible in the outer margins and within the image area. The scans are accurate as displayed, and you are welcome to contact me if you require additional information.

Mounting and matting is available, contact me for details.
