This textile is called a "Saye Gosha" or "Segusha", made by Uzbeks in Afghanistan.

This textile is made of three distinct parts: The red cotton fabric with floral embroidery, a cross stitched border added on along one corner, and the green crocheted fringe added on to that. Note that the cross-stitch border is starting to separate from the main body on one side.

The embroidery thread looks and feels like silk, but aged cotton can also take on that nice sheen. The embroidery is quite dense and in good shape. The cross-stitched area is solidly embroidered and in beautiful condition. The crocheted fringe has glass seed beads at the ends. The last photo shows the back side, red acetate lining (not attached securely to the piece). If you look closely to the photo, you will see how the bottom two pieces (cross-stitched and crocheted) have been added on by hand. Truly a collectible and gorgeous piece!

Dimensions: 36" square
Metric: 89 cm

Suzani textiles go all out for impact in color, size and their recognizable floral flair. Appropriately, the word suzani means needle, but is used to refer to the larger tapestries.

Similar textiles are also made by the Turkman. (See this discussion on TurkoTek, the must-see site for tribal textiles: http://www.turkotek.com/salon_00108/s108t4.htm)

As stated there, similar V-shaped pieces are used to decorate rolls or of quilts and bedding that would be stacked against the wall of a yurt. Another site said that these are actually sewn on to the back corner of a quilt so that each family member can find their own bedding easily. Makes sense to me!
