Petit Point Etui - Needlepoint Sewing Needle Case - French Aubusson Design 1800's

This tiny sleeve of miniscule needlework was handmade by an accomplshed artisan. It is a case for storing fragile and valuable needles, pins and small needlework tools. Inside one might have found a couple of needles saved in a small scrap of wool, a bodkin and an awl or punch. Perhaps a tiny pair of needlework scissors. The provenance of this piece dates it to the late 1800's.

The little case is lined with silk and has a sewn on paper label with the name of its original owner. Mrs. C. R. Hill. In the days when this type of case was used, ladies met in parlors to visit and work on their needlework and status was defined by their tools.

The floral design is copied from a French design. Colors include 3 shades of blue, 3 of green, yellow, gold and tiny dots of red accent the flowers. It was difficult to get the color of the petit point canvas true in the photos. It is antique beige.

The case closes with a loop over a tiny carved mother of pearl button. The loop is very fine crochet. We are including the punch shown in the photo. It has a compromised tip.
