A hot item for cool masculine gift giving! Goreng means fried in the Indonesian language so I thought it an apt name for this 65mm pale brown carved bone pendant with its fiery tail.

Flat-backed and slightly concave, following the natural curve of the bone, this piece was crafted in Bali. It would look great threaded with leather thonging or a piece of cord.

With this open design, there's potential to team it with a semi-precious stone for a more upmarket jewelry piece.

Please note that it has not been drilled.

BACK STORY
Nasi goreng is considered the national dish of Indonesia and literally means fried rice. The thing about it is that it knows no social distinction. You can get it at a little roadside warung or find it on the dinner menu at a state banquet, as it was when US President Barak Obama visited Indonesia in 2010.

As you might suspect, it had its origins in Chinese fried rice and a desire to not be wasteful. In both cultures, it is made with leftover rice from the previous day, rice being a staple in both cultures.

One of the key distinctions between the two dishes is the Indonesian use of kecap manis - sweet soy sauce. ((Kecap is pronounced very much like ketchup.)

Other ingredients include shallots, garlic, tamarind and chilli as well as "bumbu" - ground mixed spices. It's in the spices that regional differences can be detected. A Balinese nasi goreng might taste quite different to one you would find at the other end of the archipelago in Sumatra where there are often Middle Eastern and Indian influences in the cuisine.

The ingredients are generally stir fried in a wok over a flame.

Nasi goreng spesial will include either chicken or prawns and is almost always served with egg and krupuk (prawn crackers).

Nasi = cooked rice. Goreng = fried.
