Victorian Cameo Brooch - Three Graces, Carved Shell

Victorian Cameo Brooch - Nice oval carved shell cameo brooch in typical Victorian mount. By the second half of the 19th Century the Cameo had become an essential item of female adornment. This lovely Victorian shell cameo (c. 1850-1860) depicts the Three Graces - the Greek mythological figures of Agilia (Splendor), Euphrosyne (Mirth), and Thalia (Good Cheer). An intense interest in Greco-Roman culture and art during the Victorian era in England and America made mythological subjects an extremely popular theme for cameo jewelry. Many in the modern age associate these three figures with the Christian concepts of Faith, Hope, and Charity.

Nice sized, the brooch measures 1 1/2" x 1 3/4", with period correct tube hinge and "c" clasp closure.

Take a look at my other original Victorian brooches!
