This is one of the necklaces I made to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Sinking of the H.M.S. Titanic which was on April 15, 2012. Over 1,500 persons persished in the historical tragedy. This is number 1 in my series of necklaces. The first thing I did to create this peice of collage art was to clean out an antique pocket watch of it's inerds, Then I put a laminated copy of a Titanic postcard. It says White Star Line, United States Mail, and Titanic on it. I then added the words 1912, 2012 on either side and 100 Anniv. at the bottom.

To the right is a copy of a photo of a little girl who was a Titanic survivor. To the left is a picture of the Unsinkable Molly Brown who was also a survivor. In Molly's hair to represent the wealth of the 1st class passengers is a sterling silver flower hair ornament (actually a bead cap). Many hair ornaments, jewelry and antique pocket watches, etc. have been recovered from the wreckage. On the right side of Molly's face I put a peice of mother of pearl. There is also a peice of mother of pearl on the other side next to the blue rhinestone that represents the Heart of the Ocean blue diamond. Eventhough the story of Rose and Jack is made up. I wanted to include the blue heart of the sea because of the people who did lose their loved ones. It was James Cameron's film that really brought the heart breaking stories of love and loss to our attention, so I feel it is fitting to include it.

The necklace definitely has a Steampunk vibe to it. I put a pair of watch hands in the collage to represent the passing of time. I also artfully arranged various watch wheels and gears. There is also a tiny auger shell to the left under Molly's picture to remind us of those passengers who were never found undoubtedly eaten by sea creatures. So sad, but hauntingly romantic at the same time. You will get a lot of attention wearing this lovely and unique peice of jewelry. Comes with an 18" silver plated chain and safety bail.
