One gorgeous May about 2 years ago, I drove over to Sedona in Arizona to visit some of the world's most beautiful red sandstone rocks. Bell Rock, pictured here, is a favorite of mine and one of the prominent vortex sites in the area. The Sedona vortexes (yes, ordinarily it is spelled "vortices"...but not in Sedona) are places in the landscape with intensified energy. They come in various types, and Bell Rock is a very energizing one.

I climbed high up onto the sloping base to the point where it meets the vertical towers and it occurred to me that it might be a good place to try to make an onsite mold of the rock. I pressed the compound right onto the base of the tower wall and rested for a while, enjoying the expansive red rock vista to the north and the joyous feeling of just being in such a sacred place.

Back home, I used the mold to create these simple earrings out of bronze metal clay. They are slender but quite thick, so they have a pleasing solidity to them. After they were kiln fired, the backs and the edges were hand-smoothed to a satiny finish, while I brought up the high spots to a brighter shine. Simple earwires of hammered and oxidized 20g sterling silver were then added.

The resulting earrings are smaller than I usually make, and they're very flattering when worn. They have a very contemporary look, but the stone surface gives them a primal quality as well.

I love the fact that these are molded from the actual location, and they are a wonderful link to the Bell Rock vortex and Sedona. They are perfect for anyone with a strong connection to the place, and for anyone who loves the red rock landscapes of the Southwest. A reminder of the sacred landscape...and I will include the Bell Rock photo seen here.

Size: 2 3/4" x 3/16" x 1/4" or 7.2cm x 4mm x 3mm.

Care: Wash and wear as desired. Brighten the metal with a jeweler's polishing cloth.
