Vintage L.S.S. Co. No 425, a precision Caliper Rule with Side Rule, with lock and knurled thumb piece on slide. Manufactured in the early 1940s by the L.S. Starrett Company of Athol, Massachusetts. This is the five (5) inch caliper, which measures in 64th's and 32nd's of an inch on one side and 32nd's on the edge of the other. Centered on the knob side is the manufacturer's stamp as below, and the model number to the far right

Photographed as is, showing the genuine patina only age plus decades of actual, day-to-day use, can create. The owner's initials are stamped in two places on the rule, neatly in serif caps on one edge, but also lightly, perhaps experimentally, struck on the head of the slide, with the B overstruck.

This was a working man's much relied-on tool. The man was my father, the work aircraft design for for Vultee (later Convair, then General Dynamics) during the 1940s and 1950s.

Those familiar with the companies can easily imagine the projects it was a part of, and I hope might treasure...and occasionally use...this small piece of aircraft history.
