There are 12 mushrooms & toadstools on this ornament.

A fairy ring of colorful toadstools and mushrooms left un-disturbed, un-seen by anyone or anything for years can lead to surprisingly strange events. Not that anyone would know, since it's existence was such a well kept secret of the forest that it could just as easily not exist and make no impact on the world at all.
But of course it did exist.
A bright, happy little circle formed by dewy topped mushrooms, quietly passing the time beneath the shade of a giant fir tree. All fungi were welcomed into the grouping. Chanterelles, glittering red topped toadstools, quiet brown capped shrooms, innocent looking but deadly poisonous...all of them gathered here, drawn by the quiet power of the earth in that spot.
It just so happened, not that any one knew or will ever know, that the soil beneath that mossy spot had slowly been saturated with the leftover magic of the world. Since humans had spread across the planet, infesting almost every last place, conquering nature even when it didn't need to be conquered, the wild spirit of the earth had retreated into hiding. Into this spot, one of the last places that no human had ever seen.
Their satellites could not see through the canopy of trees, the craggy, dense forest and surrounding rocky landscape were almost impenetrable...almost.
Eventually a few curious people made their way to that spot, drawn not by the magic of the earth but of their own curiosity..to see, to look upon a place none had looked upon before and declare themselves the first.
It was a peculiar trait of humans, the need to be first, crawling across the landscape of earth like little children hollering their shallow victories from mountain tops and oceans deep, innocent in their own way..seeing the earth...being of the earth and yet....so much apart from it still, so young yet in nature that the remnants of ancient earth magic slipped away from these dazzling and dangerous creatures, preferring not to interact with humans at all.
Humans don't know this of course...The magic being a well kept secret of the planet...and besides that if humans were ever faced with the knowledge that something so pure and beautiful, ancient and intelligent should know of humans and choose NOT to have anything to do with them...humans wouldn't understand. To the point of refusing such a concept, beating down the idea until they turned that basic truth into an impossibility to suit their own fragile egos.
The bit of magic, shivering in the pocket of fragrant earth, surrounded by the steadfast, quiet fungi companions would hear the humans coming. Their footsteps heavy on the ground and a decision would be made.
One no human would ever know of or understand.
Instead of laying quietly in the presence of man, pretending to not exist as the silence and sancturay of it's home was interrupted, it would choose to leave.
Dragging it's self from the ground, a spherical, glowing orb of pure earth energy. What it didn't expect was the way a small bit of soil and moss clung stubbornly, refusing to let go, like a warm hug that it never wanted to end. The magic felt the tug, the pull back to the earth, the moss wrapping about it and the faint, steady rhythm of life from the mushrooms and toadstools who had grown silently around the energy for so many years.
So another decision was made, the energy left...but not alone, it pulled free it's fungi friends, the pocket of rich soil, lifting into the air on a breeze sweetly perfumed of fir tree. The planet earth giving birth to a tiny planet of it's own. A tiny world where no humans would ever walk. Quiet, green, shaded by brightly coloured mushroom caps. It slipped away from the bonds of gravity and the physics of this world and embarked on it's own journey.
Not that anyone knows.
All that anyone knows is that there's a nice, remote spot of woods where a patch of freshly turned earth stands in a curious circle beneath the trees...with the faint lingering sense of having just missed something still hovering in the air.
