This is a wonderful antique stained glass crown or religious mitre, once forming part of an English church window. The piece is Gothic Revival.

The crown is subtly hand painted in a pale gold and ochre glaze and dark brown oxide for the decorative border. I love the patina of the glass, not only does it have that very old appearance - having tiny air bubbles inside, but is has a gorgeous mottled appearance too, the result of age.

The decoration on the crown comprises of soft yellow ochre leaf shoots buds of different sizes, on twigs arranged in a vertical pattern. They are beautifully painted in a simplified naturalistic style.

The style of the crown is informed by Tudor and Renaissance decorative motifs. The Gothic Revival was about looking back to the ornamentation of the Gothic middle ages (1100-1500).
It is a lovely romantic piece in very good antique condition, a couple of specks of glaze have worn off. It measures 5 by 5 inches.

This piece of English architectural history would make a lovely gift, or an addition to a vintage-inspired room or display.
