We are so pleased to offer for sale this limited edition signed original Don Swann etching. Numbered 118/300, it is pencil signed and titled “Black and White”. The picture is matted but unframed, and has the following provenance on the back: David Bendann’s Fine Art Rooms 105 East Baltimore Street, Baltimore, Number AM 2129 (probably an inventory number for Bendann’s). The traditional sticker for Bendann’s includes the Looking Glass image. These markings date the picture most likely to the 1940’s.
Don Swann, was an American artist from Baltimore, MD. He is best known for drawings of historical American architecture, such as the US Navy Academy, colleges, universities, ships and trees. He rarely did animals; there are a few known such as a Pekinese print he did in the 40‘s and a few mallard etchings. This is an unusual subject matter and very hard to find.
His work has been exhibited in many cities in the U. S. and forms part of the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum, Mrs. John D. Rockefeller, Jr., Franklin D. Roosevelt, U.S. Naval Museum, J.P. Morgan, the Congressional Library, as well as, other prominent collectors.
