Great Men and Famous Women is a series of essays supported by pertinent illustrations on The Lives of more than 200 of the Most Prominent Personages in History. It appeared in 1894 in eight volumes and is edited by Charles F. Horne. This listing is for volumes 1 and 5.

Volume 1 includes essays on 38 people in its 204 pages. The Table of Contents starts with Alaric the Bold and ends with William the Conqueror and among others includes Miles Standish, Hannibal and Julius Caesar. It is impressively illustrated with eleven photogravures and twenty-one wood engravings and typogravures.

This is indeed a rare set with historic illustrations. The volume is bound in leather with its title in gold letters. It is, however, in poor condition, with scuffed edges well worn past the leather, something of a "shabby old book." Nearly one-half of the spine covering has been torn away. But the binding remains remarkably firm, with traditionally colored end pages and cover backings.

Volume 5 includes essays on 35 people in its 205 pages. The Table of Contents starts with Ethan Allen and ends with Zenobia, Queen of Palmyra, with Roland, King Arthur and Marco Polo among those included. It includes ten photogravures and twenty-three wood engravings and typogravures.

Like Volume 1 this volume is firmly bound and in leather. It is well scuffed, however, and misses the entire covering to the spine, while the front cover is half loose from the binding. The illustrations are impressive, with many by famous engravers such as Gustave Dore.

Each of these large books measures 9" x 11 3/4 x 1 inch.
