" A Naturalist's Notebook" Copyright 1984, Printed by Kingsport Press. A beautiful, large book of drawings of the plants, trees, mammals, amphibians, birds, insects, and other living things found in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Written by Robert G. Johnsson and Illustrated by John D. Dawson.

The Introduction, by the Author:

"A living mantle of green blankets the Great Smokey Mountains, softening their craggy outlines. Within the shadowed woodland, under stones and logs, beneath leaves and roots, in every nook and cranny, a fascinating diversity and richness of life abounds.

Early in the summer of 1984, the National Park Service installed new exhibits in its Sugarlands Visitor Center. Intended as a sampling of the park's biological richness, these exhibits included a series of notebook pages - the sketches and field notes of a hypothetical Great Smoky Mountain naturalist. Many of these pages have been assembled to make this book.

The observations recorded here are real, but - rather than those of one individual as the text implies - they are a melding of my own observations with those of several of my national park Servie Colleagues. In particular, the experiences and comments of park naturalist John Dawson, the calligraphy that of his wife, Kathleen.

Together, we comprise the Smoky Mountain naturalist - the author/artist of these pages. Through his eyes, we offer you a taste of the natural history of this unique park. We hope you will follow his lead and get out into the park to look beneath logs and on the undersides of leaves The incredible richness of life in these mountains awaits you."

This book is in good, though not perfect condition. The cover has some creases and a few spots or wear. The lower right corner of the pages has a small, very light spill stain (nothing offensive). The book measures 11" x 11 1/2" and has 130 pages plus an index of the drawings.
