Where shall I start with this piece? It is a companion of sorts to an earlier work, That Bubble Guy. The subject is not just the small elm tree my husband and I planted during our first year together, but my neighbor’s beautiful old elm tree as well.

Painted as a triptych, the outer panels show just the snowy shadows of these beautiful trees in the aftermath of a freak October blizzard that pummeled the northeast. Hours of heavy, wet flakes and punishing winds devastated our tree population while it still wore green leaves. These two beautiful elms did not survive the Halloween weekend.

The center panel gives this painting its name. The Elm sisters, one, hundreds of years old, the other, still a sapling, rise together into the night sky. Together they embrace the notion of Tree Heaven where their lovely green selves still stand together. Below them, a snowy town with bare trees lies in silence; the complete opposite of what our home was like that terrible October weekend.

The canvas is 16x20 inches. The image, in acrylic, continues onto the sides as well, so it is ready to be hung without framing.

I do not think we have seen the last of Tree Heaven.
