Description

What did the ancient ones know and why did they create these mystifying drawings that could only be seen from above, and how come they have endured to this day, what happened to the people who made them? All unanswered questions though there are many theories out there, still it's a great challenge to our understanding, as of yet unanswered.....

If you like South American history or the ancient artwork and symbols, this might be the perfect table runner for your home. This item features four unique machine embroidered Mola designs.

I used a heavy varigated cotton thread to achieve a rustic folk art look. There is a bird, a lizard, flowers and a geometric triangle. The designs were then cut and pieced and machine sewn and quilted. I used quality solid, print and batik cottons and the inner layer is cotton flannel which gives the runner a nice body without it being too bulky. The backing is black cotton. The final quilting is done in matching threads to blend with the fabrics. The finished size measurement is approx.14X60 inches.

This runner can be machine washed and will need a touch up with a cool iron when dry.

I made this table runner in response to a challenge on our Red Road Forum given to us by our team leader Kicking Bear. It was a great way to learn some history about the original peoples that walked this land and while creating this piece I tried to envision what it must have been like to live in those times so I would feel more connected to the people that came before and have a better understanding and now I have my own theories as to why they left us this monument in time.

It is based on the Nazca Lines an ancient archeological site located in Peru. There are many theories as to how and why these lines were created.

Wikipedia had this to say:

The Nazca Lines[needs IPA] are a series of ancient geoglyphs located in the Nazca Desert in southern Peru. They were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. The high, arid plateau stretches more than 80 kilometres (50 mi) between the towns of Nazca and Palpa on the Pampas de Jumana about 400 km south of Lima. Although some local geoglyphs resemble Paracas motifs, scholars believe the Nazca Lines were created by the Nazca culture between 400 and 650 AD.[1] The hundreds of individual figures range in complexity from simple lines to stylized hummingbirds, spiders, monkeys, fish, sharks, orcas, llamas, and lizards.

The lines are shallow designs made in the ground by removing the ubiquitous reddish pebbles and uncovering the whitish ground beneath. Hundreds are simple lines or geometric shapes; more than seventy are zoomorphic designs of animals such as birds, fish, llamas, jaguar, monkey, or human figures. Other designs include phytomorphic shapes such as trees and flowers. The largest figures are over 200 metres (660 ft) across. Scholars differ in interpreting the purpose of the designs, but in general they ascribe religious significance to them.

The geometric ones could indicate the flow of water or be connected to rituals to summon water. The spiders, birds, and plants could be fertility symbols. Other possible explanations include: irrigation schemes or giant astronomical calendars.[2]
