Handthrown LIdded Ceramic Storage Bowl with a Sgraffito Design

Sgraffito comes from the Italian word "graffiare" meaning "to scratch." This technique is extremely time consuming and delicate, but the results are beautiful and ununsual. For this bowl, I coated the surface with a clay slip tinted with black mason stain. Before bisque firing I carved the star, moon, and tree design as freeform and by hand. The tree I carved on the "front" of the piece and then included two moons on each side. To keep the simplicity of the design and it's folk art feel, I left the black in the beauty of the glaze.

I then did a final firing of the bowl with a celadon glaze, giving the previously black mason stain a midnight blue coloring. In some places the blue shines through, in some places the glaze is much darker. Another yarn bowl that I did in this same glaze can be found here: http://www.etsy.com/listing/95381936/handthrown-ceramic-yarn-bowl

Size: Approximately 4.5" tall and around

Almost anything can be stored in this little bowl! It's a perfect gift for the avid knitter in your life or anyone who enjoys fun, fanciful, and functional art. It has a folk art feel to it and I think this is my new favorite item! This piece is one of a kind, and the item shown in the pictures is the item you will recieve.
