Genuine 9kt Gold Victorian Safari Lion Claw Brooch. LIMITED TIME ONLY 10 hours left and it goes back up. This piece has been in my family for many years. My mum is from U.K. and I have family from Ireland and Scotland as well as Ukraine not to mention the Cherokee and Finnish heritage - oh yes and Poland. At any rate I am sad for this dear lion and always have been. His claw needs a new home. These are very very rare.

The story behind this piece is that in the mid to late Victorian period in the U.K. gentleman would go on safari to the African Continent and hunt the beautiful and varied beasts living there. In order to have a gift for their paramours or wives they would often have the claw or part of the animal fashioned into a brooch for their loved one to wear. A conversation piece and a trophy of their supposed accomplishment in slaughtering these creatures.

I guess you can see how I feel about it. As a piece of history it is interesting and shouldn't be forgotten. There are a couple of chips in the claw itself and some bits of hairline cracks have begun. I do not know how to preserve or restore this piece and I have made no attempt to do so. I understand wax is often used in old pieces to fill in these areas but it is a special kind that won't cause exacerbation of the issue. I suspect a taxidermist would best be consulted unless you are a collector and already know what to do.

The gold work is beautifully done. Very delicate and detailed. I have photographed the hallmark for you. It is 9CT gold - very common to the period in Europe. It is 1 3/4" long from top to bottom and 1 inch wide at the gold top. This is without a doubt OOAK.
