Description: In my endless pursuit to parse out and quantify the best moments of even the most dubious achievements, Fleetwood Mac’s second offering of 1973, Mystery To Me, is the best of their middle period albums. While their output from this era is often an exercise that yields moderate reward, all of their lost period albums have moments that are very enjoyable and even spectacular at times. Therefore, for the high number of tunes here that fall into the latter category, I have declared this the winner of such a middling honor. It seems that the Mac finally realized that the recipe to successful soft rock is achieved by putting more of the emphasis on the rock and less on the soft, as this may be one of the hardest rocking efforts they ever released. The LP is mainly propelled by Welch’s blend of breathy vocal delivery, poetic mysticism, and hard rock that hints at his short-lived post Mac project, Paris. “Emerald Eyes”, “Hypnotized”, and “The City” are not only admirable for this briefly realized incarnation of the band, but among the best in the Fleetwood Mac canon. Also rounding out the collection are a pretty sweet rendition of The Yardbirds’ classic “For Your Love”, and Christine McVie’s vaguely disco-ish “Keep On Going”. This isn’t necessarily the Fleetwood Mac embraced by most, but is surely a gem to be salvaged from their most overlooked period. And what is up with that cover?!

Condition: I grade very conservatively according to Goldmine Record Grading 101 Guidelines (http://www.goldminemag.com/tag/goldmine-price-guides)

Vinyl: VG (7.5/10); visually clean with minor scuffs and scratches that do not affect play; some surface noise, but does not detract from enjoyment.
Cover: VG (7.5/10); signs of modest shelf and ring wear; readable spine with light peeling from gatefold cover; clean gatefold; includes cardstock lyric sheet; LP comes in audiophile poly inner sleeve.
