This scarf or shawl is made of Uzbek ikat silk traditionally produced in Margilan, Ferghana Valley. This type of silk is called 'shoyi'; it is very thin (but strong), smooth and cool to the touch. It has a slight sheen.

This particular scarf may be one of a kind, as I only obtained a small piece of fabric and I have never seen the likes of it before. The scarf is insanely beautiful, boasting bold colors and a traditional ikat pattern. It has no metallic threads, but still glistens with gold due to the heavenly smooth golden silk threads woven in. The scarf gleams and shines like a crazy diamond; I have never seen a piece of silk so bold and opulent before. It reminds me of a piece of jewelry rather than mere fabric. It is fit for an Oriental princess riding a white Arab horse through a desert which is covered by grass and flowers in spring time or sitting at velvet pillows in her summer palace, listening to traditional music, slow and sweet like honey.

Uzbek silk may be less famous than Thai silk - to a large extent due to the isolation of the country in the Soviet Union time - but it is not less beautiful, although they are different. Ikat patterns are somewhat reminiscent of what you can see in Mexican fabrics. Please click the photos to see larger size.

Its size is 170 x 44 cm (67 x 17 inches) without fringe.

The hems are meticulously finished by me with a delicate machine stitch. As a rule, Uzbek silk scarves come unfinished, and just have a fringe, but no stitch to protect the edges. I prefer to finish the edges with a thin silk thread to feel confident that the scarf will last.

Please dry clean or hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent.

In the last picture you can see me buying vintage silks in Bukhara, one of the most beautiful cities of the Orient and an important part of the Great Silk Road. We are based in Uzbekistan, and due to that we have direct access to wonderful silk fabrics, both vintage or modern.
