This is a beautiful antique Gothic Revival stained glass fragment. It was once part of an 1800s church window - forming a part of its decorative border.

The lovely simple piece depicts a stylised plant form, hand-painted by a Victorian stained glass artisan in rich gold yellow and dark umber brown. The motif and design are inspired by medieval Gothic ornamentation ~ the early illuminated sacred manuscripts and the embellishments, tapestries and embroideries of the English Tudor years (1500s).
The Gothic Revival was about looking back to the ornamentation of the Gothic middle ages and this is a lovely example of that drawing on the past.

This piece looks best near to quite strong light. It is in very good antique condition, the corners have been cut at right-angles to aid the fitting into the lead surround. The glass measures 6 1/4 by 2 3/4 inches.

This piece of English architectural history would make a lovely addition to a vintage-inspired room or display.
