The fossilized tooth of an extinct species of bison capped in silver and set with four matching hand carved turquoise cabachons.

Pagans love flashy big predator totems, but to Native cultures there is no unimportant living thing. Life feeds life from big cat down to algae. As such, among the Cherokee, the largest animal they hunted, Deer was seen as the most generous of animals for allowing itself to be hunted and to feed other creatures.

For the Plains people it was the Bison and/or Buffalo, from whom these tribes lived and who they respected and revered. Bison today are finally making a comeback in the wild and in captivity, after nearly being wiped out by greed and in an attempt at annihilation of the Plains Indian cultures. Out of respect for these beautiful and powerful animals and the cultures who hunted them, I offer this piece.

The bison tooth has been stabilized and varnished, and then set in a custom made sterling silver cap. Four matching pieces of turquoise were cut in cabachon and then added to the silver cap. Friction and adhesive hold the tooth in place, and the piece was crafted with an attitude of reverence and respect.

Each year I do a piece in honor of Sacred Prey, as I am an omnivore and wish to pay honor to the spirits of what I eat. This is my piece for 2011, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Smithsonian Native American Museum. Proof of donation to the museum will be furnished to the buyer upon request.

While this is a sturdy piece, it should not be worn in extreme temperatures or when changing from severe cold to heat. Nor should it be immersed in water. As this is a fossil, it can be shipped anywhere in the world legally.
