Hand-coloured botanical print from
ILLUSTRATIONS OF THE NATURAL ORDER OF THE VEGETABLE KINGDOM

By PROFESSOR OLIVER
Keeper of the Herbarium and Library at the Royal Gardens, Kew

PREPARED FOR THE SCIENCE AND ART DEPARTMENT OF THE COUNCIL OF EDUCATION
Published by Chapman and Hall in 1874

Illustrated by MR W. H. Fitch (1817-1892)

Walter Hood Fitch was one of the world's most prolific botanical artists and produced these drawings whilst working at Kew Gardens. He was the sole artist for Curtis's Botanical Magazine for over 40 years.

This is a recent acquisition I couldn't resist! The drawings are utterly charming and were originally produced as sheets for use in museums and classrooms.
The prints vary in condition so look closely at the scan. There is no foxing (brown spots) but most plates are slightly yellowed. Some have grubby marks and a little edge-tanning. However, considering they are nearly 140 years old, they are in good condition. Some of the prints have damp-stains which are more pronounced on the back than the front. Others have small binding holes to the left and a few are slightly ragged on the left.

This print has a curved closed tear on the lower left-hand side which can be seen in the scan. This would hardly show once the print is mounted (matted) and framed.

Paper size: 24 x 18 cm OR 9 x 7 inches, approximately.

Some pages have been printed with small or no margins, the printing being run to the edge of the paper. They would need to be matted carefully before framing.

Your print will be slipped inside a polythene bag with extra card or paper, then posted in a cardboard-backed envelope, via airmail if overseas. All prints, whether antique, vintage or modern should be protected from exposure to direct sunlight.
