It was called the Gilded Age for a reason... and this set of ramekins from Higgins & Seiter, dating to the late 19th century, illustrates what a serious affair dining was held to be during that period.

There are five ramekins and three matching saucers here, made in Austria and retailed by Higgins & Seiter, which was considered to be one of the best china firms in NYC from the 1880s until the First World War. The pieces all have a wide gold border, fretted with black, surrounding an elaborate gold scrollwork design.

These dishes would originally have been used for baked dishes such as individual souffles or pots de creme, as part of a meal of eight or more courses. However, if your dinner is not quite so formal, you could get creative -- scatter these along the table or buffet, holding olives, nuts, dips or bonbons.

Using antique china is a wonderful way to experience history, and these dishes are
especially stunning!
