A tiny 1 7/8" tall amethyst / lavender colored ANTIQUE PILL bottle. Bottle is flat like a flask but also has a rounded base so it will not stand up but lies on the side. It was designed like this so that it could be easily stored in a pocket or purse.

Bottle is embossed on one side "SMITH'S BILE BEANS".

This is an ORIGINAL HAND Blown Into Mold (BIM) antique bottle with a hand tooled lip, ca. late 1800's.

Bottle has dull stain and etching and also has an air pocket defect on the front, in the word "SMITH".

This little antique bottle actually carried small pills or 'bile' beans that was used to cure backaches, headaches, toothache, etc. etc.

This bottle is not commonly seen and it seems you have to really spend some time looking to find one for sale. This example is especially nice with strong purple hue. With few exceptions, only clear glass from before 1914 will turn sun-colored-amethyst, a chemical reaction that takes place with exposure to the ultra violet rays of the sunlight. Not only does this deep purple/amethyst color make it a great looking bottle, but it also authenticates it as being truly antique!
