Let's revisit France in the 1950s. Life, as depicted by whimsical French illustrator Hélène Poirié, is celebrated through simple, joyful activities and interactions – day-to-day routines at home, adventures in travels and discoveries in nature. Her use of colour is vibrant, bold yet delicate and harmonious. Her subjects' expressions are often diffused and humbled by everything that is going on around them. Her attention to details is par excellence. There is a consistent theme surrounding Hélène Poirié's art: playful innocence and eternal youthfulness, in other words, the essence of what the French call “joie de vivre” infused with a hefty perfume of nostalgia.

Supported by Paris-based publisher Éditions Bourrelier et Cie, Hélène Poirié illustrated a charming series of large posters and educational books - geography handbooks, French, dictionaries and picture books.

Poirié's series of “elocution” posters were formerly hung in French classrooms to serve as communication aids to young students. The students were expected to describe the scenes and activities from these posters. Those days are long gone. It is relatively rare to track down Poirié's posters these days.

As difficult as it is to part with them, La Grange d'Art is pleased to present our limited collection of “Images de la Vie” series of vintage posters by Hélène Poirié.
