The "Dervish" - a new style of supported spindle in Dymondwood and Blackheart teatree - lightweight

This spindle is a stock item and you will receive an item very similar to the one in the photos.

This new style of light support spindle has a thin straight shaft and a small whorl at the base. The spindle shaft is made from Dymondwood (TM), this is a composite material made from dyed wood veneers laminated and glued together under great pressure with a resin. This sets extremely hard and inert. The result is a highly attractive blend of colours, depending on the angle of the veneers different visual effects are created. The material has the added advantage that it is warp-free and dimensionally stable - Dymondwood will resist warping with humidity changes.Dymondwood is particularly ideal for supported spindles as the material is very hard wearing and the tip will remain sharp for longer than with most woods.

The whorl is made from Blackheart Teatree ( Melaleuca squarrosa) found in wet areas in the southern states of Australia. It is a hard and dense wood making it ideal for this purpose. It is a mid brown and takes a good smooth finish. This particular piece has beautiful dark lace figuring and is from Tasmania. The tree is known as Scented Paperbark - the wood itself has no fragrance. The shape of the whorl resembles the spinning skirt of a Sufi dervish. The support tip has a fine point for long spins.

The spindle is finished to a very smooth surface, polished with a french polish and then a final gloss of carnauba wax for a long lasting shine and protection.

Your spindle is checked for quality and spin before despatch and comes with a tip protector and is packed with some Tasmanian Corriedale roving and a signed tag with the woods used listed and date of making.

This spindle style has a remarkably fast spin. good duration and excellent balance due to the low centre of gravity and the placing of the largest whorl diameter as near to the base as is practical. This accentuates the gyroscopic stability making it highly suited to park and draft style spinning.

Typical dimensions - spindle length 230 to 240mm, (9.5 to 9.75 in), weight 28 to 35 grams (1 to 1.25 oz approx).
