This medium sized mug is adorned with a pair of white mute swans, facing each other on a carved background of water, with reflections below. The design on the mug was produced using an elaborate technique known as sgraffito. The mug was thrown in a dark brown stoneware clay, and the entire mug was dipped into a liquid white clay slip. The negative space was carved away, leaving the white swans, and the carved reflections in the water. After bisque firing, some matte black glaze was painted on the bills, and a touch of red, plus some shiny brown in the eyes to give them life. The swans were then carefully painted with wax, (but not the reflections!) and the mug dipped in celadon green glaze, inside and out. After a reduction firing at cone 10, the swans remain a gleaming, unglazed white, with black and red accents, and the reflections become pale green, with the white slip showing through the translucent green celadon. The textured background is a deep green on the dark clay, appearing like the rippled surface of water. Inside the mug, in the bottom, there is a hand thrown swirling pattern, reminiscent of water.

This mug is tall and fairly slender, but easily holds 12 fluid ounces (US), and somewhat more if filled to the rim. The height is about 4 7/16", the width at the rim about 3 3/4" . The handle on this mug is the smallest of the three mugs, just large enough to admit three of my slender fingers. The weight is comfortable, reasonably sturdy in feel, but not heavy in the least.

I have included several photos, with closeups intended to show the raised, carved surfaces.

Hand washing is usually safest with hand made ceramics, but this cup should be sturdy enough for the dishwasher and microwave.
