This is a rare carved ivory (pre-ban) brooch in the shape of a hand holding a rose. The Victorians loved the hand motif and it was used in jewelry, mourning symbolism, decorative household items, etc.

This was purchased at an antiques market in the UK. These brooches are getting harder and harder to find, especially the nicely carved ivory ones. Not sure of the origin of this piece-it may be Dieppe ivory.

The hand is wearing a bead bracelet and you can also see the detail of a lacy cuff. The rose is well carved with leaves and stem detail.

The brooch has the old C clasp pinback which is nice & secure. There are no chipped areas of the ivory. It has slightly yellowed a bit on the hand-this dirt may come off with more cleaning but we didn't want to scrub it too much as we are not ivory experts. The pin measures 2 1/4 inches long.
