The prickly surface of the Western Big Leaf Maple required caution and care as I turned the piece at 900 RPM on the lathe. This Western Big Leaf Maple has a beautiful iridescent quality swirling grain patterns and lovely colors. It is a beautiful piece of wood made even more attractive and quite dramatic with its natural spiked edge.

This Western Big Leaf Maple Bowl is finished with Deft Danish Oil which is a penetrating tung oil urethane. Its translucent formula brings out the natural beauty of wood, and does not mask the wood grain. There are 8 to 10 hand-rubbed coats of finish on this piece, these coats will provide more protection and enhance the color of this bowl.

# 766 Wood Identified, Signed and Dated by the Artist

Western Big Leaf Maple (Acer macrophyllum), also called broadleaf maple or Oregon maple, is one of the few commercial hardwood tree species on the Pacific Coast. It is small compared with its conifer associates. Most mature trees average 50 feet tall however, some can reach heights 100 feet and grow in dense stands. They are often well formed and free of branches for half to two-thirds of their height making them excellent shade trees. The wood is used for furniture, especially piano frames, and the sap can be made into syrup.
