Bathing beauties have been a popular postcard subject since the early 1900’s. The titles printed on the card’s front, such as “Having Fun in Atlantic City”, implied the model was indigenous to the locale – or at the very least - had traveled to the resort to have her photograph taken. However, it was highly unlikely the featured subject ever set foot on the shores of “the resort” depicted.

In reality, virtually all postcard printers and distributors relied on “stock photography” for their images. The term describes existing images that can be licensed for specific uses. One of the humorous results of this practice is sometimes in evidence at postcard collector’s conventions and shows, whereby some displays feature cards emblazoned with the names of several locales, placed next to each other while sharing the exact same photograph of the same girl!

To maintain the line’s original brand defining characteristic, Douglas Hunsberger photographed his own images of seaside sirens for “Designer Series Postcards”. Since there was no budget for professional models, the subjects needed to not only very photogenic - but able to take direction extremely well to compensate for their lack of modeling experience.

Barbie, “The Body”, Ballinghoff, an aspiring actress and singer from nearby Stone Harbor, NJ, had previously modeled for Hunsberger in a series of ads for Kohr Bros. Custard that appeared in Sunny Day Magazines. The photo shoot to drop this bombshell on to a postcard occurred just four days after her twenty-first birthday. Unfortunately, another kind of “bombshell” was dropped the very next day - Barbie got married! That one small fact was kept quiet from her legions of fans for as long as possible – at least until thousands of the cards had already been sold.

Barbie always came to her photo shoots ready to work hard to get the right shot. With her great sense of humor - she was always great fun too. The biggest challenge was making sure all of her 36–24–36 figure stayed inside her tiny bikini while she ascended, what seemed to be, the world's largest sand dune.
