Antique Hand Made Omo Valley Ethiopian Copper Beads on old Natural Fiber Strand Ready to Wear~Antique Omo Copper Beads~Jewelry Making Supply

One 24 inch strand of antique hand crafted copper Ethiopian beads strung on old natural fibers. This strand can be worn as is as they slip easily over the head or broken down to create a new masterpiece. The beads measure 1 1/8" around and there are 77 beads on the strand that weighs approximately 4 3/4 ounces.

The beads are VERY smooth edged and are a uniform 8mm in diameter, the copper is approximately 1mm in thickness and the holes are about 5mm. These are older beads I imported from Ethiopia many years ago.

These beads are quite old, from my research they appear to have been made circa 1900 or earlier. I've seen some strands that claim to be well over 100 years old. If these could only talk.....the stories of their travels and previous owners would no doubt be truly fascinating...travelling across who knows how many deserts and continents over the decades!! I imported them directly from Ethiopia about 10 years ago with the intention of creating something out them myself. They made it over my head and around my neck on numerous occasions. Time to let them go to someone with the time to bead.


The use of copper for producing African Metal Beads is thought to date back to around 1300 B.C when tribespeople first discovered copper deposits among the Dix-Huit Montagnes of the Ivory Coast. This type of copper bead strands have been worn for centuries by women of Ethiopia's Omo Valley tribes whom believe copper to be particularly advantageous in improving fertility.

History, Legend and Lore of Copper use by humans is a long and varied, dating back nearly 10,000 years with multiple applications. Copper is, in fact, humanity’s first metal and shows up in Sumerian and Egyptian metallurgy circa 3900 BC.

Mystical Properties:

Due to the fact that copper is such a wonderful physical conductor of electricity and heat, it is also considered the conductor of the spiritualist's belief system. According to myths, copper has the ability to conduct spiritual energy back and forth between individuals, crystals, auras, the mind and the spirit world.
It is also believed that copper has the power to amplify thoughts when sending and receiving psychic communications. New Age followers carry copper with their stones and crystals to 'straighten' the properties of them, as well they are used when crating crystal wands to be certain of their clear and straight powers. Beginning in the 1970s in the United States, copper used as a healing agent began to increase. People who believe in its power esteem it as a very powerful assistant with arthritic and rheumatic diseases, but also look to it for its healing properties in improving the circulation of blood, increasing energy, detoxification, reducing inflammation, stabilizing metabolism and improving oxygen use.
