A PRETTY FRENCH IVORY FLORAL AND FAN DESIGN SPANISH STYLE HAIR COMB

This sale is for a pretty French ivory hair comb dating from the period of the late 19th or early 20th century.

CONDITION: good vintage condition

SIZE: 4¾ ins h x 4¼ ins w (11.5 x 8 cms)

DATE: 1910s to 1920s

DESCRIPTION:

This hair accessory is made from a substance known as French Ivory or Ivorene. It is a synthetic material designed to substitute for genuine elephant ivory. The comb is made in the form of an unfurled fan with small flowers and leaves set between the spokes of the fan.

Combs of this type are often called Spanish combs after the beautiful ornaments worn by Spanish ladies with their native dress. Such ornaments were worn in a characteristic manner, being placed such a way that the tall heading stood up proud. This enabled them to be viewed from all angles and for the details to be seen effectively outlined against the light.

This manner of wearing the decorative comb is shown in the accompanying photograph on the mannequin and in picture 5. This is taken from a contemporary
photograph which shows a sitter wearing a similar tall fan shaped hair comb with fancy decoration.

FURTHER INFORMATION:

Perhaps the earliest reference to the term French ivory was the importation into the USA in 1913 of ivory coloured cellulose nitrate articles manufactured by a company called the French Ivory Products Ltd, Toronto, Canada. Other American companies (e.g. J.B. Ash Co., Rockford, Illinois) seem to have adopted this trademark, and it is now taken as a generic term for ivory coloured celluloid. Besides the plain cream coloured celluloid there is a grained or striped version, often called zebra.
