This unusual pendant is a fossilized brachiopod wrapped to emphasize its similarity to a ginkgo leaf.

Its overall shape has a hint of the ancient Meso-American and Egyptian styles about it. Those influences make this a striking neutral piece with echos of adventures and lost worlds.

Brachiopods (literally arm-foot) were bottom feeding marine creatures with two shells. You can see the lip of their joint nicely on the back of this one. They're symmetrical when viewed from above, unlike bivalves. They're sometimes called butterfly shells. This one is a member of the Mucrospirifer genus and is probably from the mid Devonian period. (So it's around 385 million years old, older than the first dinosaurs!)

It's wrapped in non tarnish gold colored silver plated copper and silver plated copper to bring some color and brightness in contrast to the deep grey of the fossil. The plus side of non tranish is just that, you'll never have to worry about polishin the wire around this delicate fossil!

This piece is a bit over 1 3/4" tall by a little over 1 1/2" wide.

Comes gift boxed, let me know if you need it wrapped.
